Responding to HMIP children in custody report
In response to the HM Inspectorate of Prisons annual report regarding experiences of children in custody, Nacro Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, said:
“As a society we cannot stand by any longer as report after report highlights the wholly unacceptable conditions that children in custody are facing. Not only are these conditions inhumane, they are ineffective and often make things worse.
“With nearly 7 out of 10 young people released from prison reoffending, we desperately need to change. The Government must commit to a fundamentally different approach to working with children swept up into the youth justice system. The system has for too long been under-resourced and overlooked. Itβs time to treat children as children and give those who have made mistakes the best chance at a second chance.”
