Government plans to rent prison spaces abroad

Published:

The Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk, has announced new measures that will allow the Government to rent prison cells overseas which will mean that people will be locked up for longer.

What is Nacro’s response?

Nacro’s chief executive, Campbell Robb, said: “We see everyday the consequences of growing levels of overcrowding in our prisons. Years of lack of investment, increased sentences and escalating political rhetoric have left us with a system at breaking point. We know the answer doesn’t lie in renting foreign prison places and increasing sentences but investing in communities and rehabilitation. We need immediate steps to ease pressure on the system, and an urgent cross party royal commission to build the long term plan this country needs.”
