This week’s report from HM Chief Inspector of Prisons is a damning indictment of a prison system on its knees. This is a system that is failing in its most basic duty, to keep people safe from harm. Efforts to rehabilitate and prepare prison-leavers for release have been struggling under the weight of decades of under-investment, overcrowding and poor long-term planning.
Campbell Robb, Nacro, Chief Executive comments on the start of the Government’s early release scheme, known as SDS40: “The Government needed to take action in the short-term to tackle the prisons crisis but inevitably this is going to cause problems elsewhere in a broken system.”
The report found that disadvantaged students who were eligible for free school meals are nearly five times more likely to be permanently excluded and four times more likely to be suspended than their peers.
Nacro Education, one of the country’s largest independent training providers, has opened its new centre in Borough Road, Middlesbrough this week. The centre which will help over 100 young people each year offers courses in construction, hair and beauty, childcare and landscape maintenance.
