This qualification is designed for those who want to improve their communication, problem-solving, numeracy, and practical life skills to support personal growth and future opportunities. 

You’ll develop your knowledge and understanding of key independent living and workplace skills, including managing money, preparing for employment, and effective communication.  

Our course provides a broad foundation of learning, combining practical activities with essential core knowledge to help you feel more confident in day-to-day life. 

By the end of the course, you will have gained valuable transferable skills, whether you’re looking to move on to further education, enter the workplace, or build greater independence in your daily life.

Course details

At Nacro Education Peterborough you can learn your way, at your pace. Our Skills for Life: Progression Level 1 course is designed to help you build confidence, independence, and essential life skills to support your personal growth, education, and future employment. 

The course structure has been carefully designed to allow you to share experiences with others while developing your skills at a pace that works for you. You are also given the opportunity to do a vocational module alongside Skills for Life: this course will offer you modules in Garden maintenance and basic cookery skills. 

Our delivery style focuses on understanding, nurturing, and discussion, with plenty of practical activities to bring learning to life. We know that everyone learns differently, so we make sure lessons are not rushed, giving you time to reflect, process, and fully engage with the topics.

This course is for you if: 

  • You need a starting point to build social skills, confidence, and independence before – taking your next step. 
  • You want to develop a range of skills to move into mainstream education, employment, or a new career path. 
  • You have an EHCP and would benefit from additional support in your learning journey. 
  • You want to combine vocational learning with personal and social development, helping you explore career options or prepare for employment. 

Our course allows you to combine your learning with work experience to develop your independence and confidence.  

You will be assessed through a portfolio of work, to demonstrate your knowledge and skills. Once completed, you’ll have the confidence, experience, and practical skills to take your next step, whether that’s further education or employment.  

 

Students are required to successfully complete the following modules for a Skills for Life: Progression Level 1 course.

  • Take Part in an activity 
  • Active Citizenship in the Local Community 
  • Using Cooking Skills in the Domestic Kitchen

  • Garden Maintenance Skills 

 

At Nacro Education Peterborough we use a variety of assessment methods to ensure you complete the Skills for Life: Progression Level 1 course.   

Modules are assessed in the form of a portfolio of work, including observations from practical tasks or written assessments. You’ll be supported with all your work and your teacher will go through all this when you sign up for the course. 

As part of your Skills for Life: Progression Level 1 course, we encourage you to take part in enrichment activities that will support your learning and personal development. 

You’ll get the chance to take part in placements that connect directly to your course, allowing you to put your learning into practice in real-life settings. You’ll also take part in enrichment experiences like visits to local community projects, businesses, and essential services, helping you build confidence, develop key life and social skills, and gain valuable insight into the world beyond the classroom. 

You will also have opportunities to visit the Peterborough Recycling Plant to learn about sustainability and waste management, take part in hands-on activities at The Green Backyard, an urban growing project focused on community and environmental awareness, and gain insight into conservation efforts with Frog life, a national wildlife charity based in Peterborough. Additionally, visits to local banks, the Job Centre, and the city’s Visitors Centre will help you build confidence in managing finances, exploring career options, and navigating public services, key skills for independent living and future employment. 

After successfully completing this course, you will have the core knowledge and skills to take your next step whether that’s progressing to a higher-level qualification, exploring employment opportunities, or developing greater independence. 

You will achieve a Certificate in Skills for Life: Progression Level 1, which will open up a range of pathways, including: 

  • Progressing to the next level of study through our inclusive learning environment, with the opportunity to move onto a mainstream course at Nacro Education Peterborough matches your interests and future goals. 
  • Taking part in a Supported Internship (where available) to gain hands-on workplace experience. 
  • Exploring voluntary or paid employment to build practical skills in a real-world setting. 
  • Developing more independent living skills, giving you the confidence to manage daily life and future opportunities. 

 

Throughout the course, you will also have access to career advice and guidance, helping you explore your options and prepare for the next stage of your journey. 

 

A keen interest in personal development is desirable. There are no specific entry requirements for this course however you may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved an Entry Level qualification.

  • Improve English, maths* and digital literacy to strengthen a student’s foundations for work and life.
  • Participate in a range of work experience and employment related encounters to gain insights into the industries and careers paths that are of interest to them.
  • Develop a full range of essential skills supported by our Skills Builder partnership including communication, problem solving, teamworking, interview practice and CV writing.
  • Participate in a range of activities, opportunities, team collaboration challenges and educational site visits that enable personal development through real experiences.
  • Learn financial and human skills through our partnerships with MyBank and our localised tutorial programme.

*GCSE/Functional Skills English and maths are only required if you haven’t already gained a level 4 or above.
