Department for Education pupil exclusions in England (2019)
In response to Department for Education pupil exclusions in England figures, Nacro Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, said:
βPupils at risk of being excluded from school are often facing vulnerabilities such as poor mental health, family breakdown and poverty. For the numbers of pupils being excluded to reach a decade high, leaves some of our most vulnerable young people at risk of becoming increasingly marginalised and isolated. This increases the likelihood of offending behaviour, as we know that 85% of young people within youth custodial settings in England have been excluded from school.
βAt Nacro, many of the young people who attend one of our Education and Skills Centres across the country have been excluded from school, experience multiple barriers, or have not been able to complete their school career. We see first-hand that early intervention is key, through provision of the right educational and pastoral support to prevent a downward spiral, help young people overcome these issues, and progress with their learning and skills development, and succeed.β
