Responding to the prison incentives system announcement
Nacro Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, said:
βGiving governors the freedom to increase time for inmates to take part in education and work programmes, as well as recreational activities, is a vital step in the right direction. To tackle stubborn reoffending rates once and for all, we need a relentless focus upon rehabilitation from the moment someone is sentenced, right through to resettlement within the community. People must be equipped to live a better life upon release and turn away from crime through access to the right accommodation, health and employment support.
βWe look forward to updates on plans to scrap short prison sentences which we know simply do not work. This is critical in order to reduce the unnecessarily high numbers of people being sent to prison in the first place.β
