Private renting and the impact it has on vulnerable people
In response to the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Select Committee report on the private rented sector, Nacro Director of Housing and Wellbeing, Joanne Drew, said:
βWe fully support the call for additional resources to be given to local authorities to support early intervention in the prevention of homelessness. In particular we support landlord enforcement activity when all other measures do not succeed in encouraging good landlord and tenant relationships.
β10% of Nacro housing service users move on to accommodation within the private rented sector.Β Whilst we equip and support them to manage current and future tenancies, the way in which the private rented sector operates and the behaviour of some private landlords, as highlighted by the HCLG Select Committee, poses real challenges for vulnerable people.Β Ending of a tenancy in the private rented sector is the single biggest cause of homelessness in England. Such homelessness blights lives and is a huge cost to cash strapped local authorities.β
