Maths success after only four months of study

Twins, Mohammed and Bakri, 17, received their GCSE results in Maths and English today.

Despite only being at our Middlesbrough centre since January, and in the country only a year, they have taken a great first step towards getting their qualifications. Mohammed achieved a 4 (C equivalent), and Bakri a high 3 (D equivalent) in Maths.

They have been able to get to this standard in such a short time by putting in the extra hours. Both have completed extra tutoring, they have 99% attendance, stayed behind after class for more help, and asked for extra homework to be able to learn more. Their work has paid off, and they are now off to college to take a computer science course.

Surprise result thanks to staff support

At our Chatham Centre, Harry, who was predicted a 3 (D) in English, revealed a 5 (B) on his results sheet.

According to his teachers, Harry was not the most confident in his skills. He was quiet and reserved. With staff support, he was able to overcome these hurdles, namely thanks to the enthusiastic Programme Lead, Elaine Bentley.

Elaine was able to help Harry reframe his understanding of the work he was given. With this, he was able to figure out what made it difficult for him. This gave him the tools he needed to continue studying at Nacro Education, taking on a course in Construction.

Another student, Asadullah was over the moon to receive a grade 4 for his Maths result. He will be going onto North Kent College to study a Level 2 in Computer Science.

He’d previously studied Level 1 Work Ready with Nacro, where he achieved in all areas of his study program. Asadullah took part in work experience where he worked at Nacro’s Head Office, designing logos, and supporting the Marketing Team. We wish Asadullah lots of luck in his new venture at NKC.

Helping students out of their shell

Prior to starting at our Boston Centre, Castor did not have any formal qualifications and had never taken a formal exam. He was home schooled from Year 9 and felt like he had missed out on social interactions with people his own age.

When starting at the centre Castor was quite shy and didn’t know any other students. Over his time at Nacro Castor’s confidence has grown and he has undertaken a solo work experience placement and has had an active part to play across the centre as he always wants to help. Castor has built lasting friendships and has been able to gain those social interactions that he felt he had missed out on.

Castor hasn’t only just built on his social skills, but he has also achieved a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care and this year, he attempted his GCSE Maths for the first time and achieved an amazing grade 5!

Castor has successfully applied to the Army and will be starting his career with them in October. It is amazing to see how far Castor has come and what he has achieved over his time at Nacro.

What to do if you’re disappointed with your results

We know not every student will be happy with their results; staff have been on-site helping students know what options are available to them, letting them know that they can resit their exams in the following academic year, appealing the results, and speaking with careers guidelines or the National Careers Service.

Providing students with the support to succeed

At Nacro Education, no matter what GCSEs you left school with, we’ll help you achieve the grades you need to move onto college, university, apprenticeships or work. Our supportive and professional tutors will help and guide you through the theory and give you the confidence to retake your GCSEs and progress in further levels of study or in your career.
