Homelessness after prison

Supporting those who are made homeless after prison

What Nacro Does

We help thousands of people every year through our housing services, including those who face homelessness after prison (ex-offenders) as well as young people, care leavers, women and ex-service personnel, to prevent rough sleeping.

Find our full directory of housing services here.

Criminal Record Support Service (CRSS)

Our Criminal Record Support Service helps people who have a criminal record with information about how to apply for housing, and other areas of living with a criminal record such as finding a job and travel.

Why having a home to go to is important after prison

Without a stable home to go to after being released, prisoners are being set up to fail. If you come out of prison with nowhere to go it is virtually impossible to maintain any progress people have made in prison to: move away from substance abuse, get and keep a job, or build healthy positive relationships.

Those who have come out of prison without a home can experience mental health issues such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.

If you are a referrer and are supporting someone at risk of being made homeless after leaving prison, visit our Service Finder to find your local Nacro Housing or CAS-2 service.

If you’re concerned that you are at risk of being made homeless after leaving prison, you can visit or contact the Criminal Record Support Service (CRSS) and we will try to connect you with the support you need.

How we provide prison leavers with housing advice and support

We have over 50 years of experience delivering services specifically tailored to those coming out of prison and ex-offenders. We offer support, housing and advice. We also take insights from those services and the people who work in them to create campaigns for change.

Bank holidays at home, but not for everyone…

As the bank holiday weekend draws in, we all look forward to spending time with family and friends in our homes. But for people leaving prison, many are facing the prospect of having no home at all.
